Cassava tuber has high starch content and it is used as one of the popular raw material to extract starch. How to extract cassava starch from cassava root? This article will give you a brief introduction.
In all potato (potato, sweet potato, cassava etc.) production processes, the method of starch extraction is physical separation. To put it simply, it is the process of separating the various contents at once after the material is completely broken. Therefore, in cassava starch production line, the procedures are divided into cleaning, crushing, separating, concentrating, dewatering and drying.
How to extract starch from cassava?
First is cleaning and crushing section. After cassava roots are harvested from field, firstly they should be cleaned before they are sent for further production. Cassava tubers are sent to dry sieve for dry cleaning to remove surface attached dirties and then go through paddle washing machine for wet washing to be cleaned completely.
After cassava is well cleaned, it will be sent to next process crushing. In the crushing procedure, it is divided into two steps: one is to cut cassava into small pieces by cutting machine, another is to crush small cassava pieces to cassava mash, after that cassava starch is extracted completely and mixed with other contents of cassava.
Cassava cleaning & crushing
After crushing section, next is separating and concentrating section. The cassava mash we get from last process contains starch, water, protein, fibers, cell liquid etc. In this process, we need to separate them one by one and get purified starch milk. Firstly centrifuge sieve is applied to separate solid fibers, and then using fine fiber sieve to separate tiny size fibers to make sure high cleanness. Then hydrocylcone station is used to remove protein and cell liquid, by the principle of centrifuge force. At the same time starch slurry is refined, the concentration is finished in hydrocyclone and when it achieve the required density, it will be pumped into dewatering machine.
Starch slurry separation and refining
The last step of how to extract cassava starch from cassava root is dehydration and drying. After starch slurry with certain density is received from hydrocyclone, peeler centrifuge will be applied for dehydration and at end we will get wet starch with moisture content 38-40%. Wet starch is not ready for storage, so next we need to use flash dryer to completely dry starch to reduce moisture content into 12-14% or as clients' request.
